Leaving Everything Behind

I was in a room with a group of people. Everyone was welcomed, but not all came. In a strange way it kinda felt like I was defending my dissertation . . . OR did it feel more like getting your committee’s approval for your research project?

None-the-less, I digress. In this room, Héloïse was assuming the role of the Teacher’s Assistant.

Then, someone said, “What’s your abstract?

My abstract is:

Nurse burnout is an increasing problem among seasoned nurses. This A/R/Tographical study analyzes data in one nurse’s blog post over the course of 3 1/2 years. Reader’s will be able to decipher the author’s time lapsed post and participate in discussion questions. The study’s result was not at all expected and might even shock some!

Quickly, I added all study data had been creatively woven into one post called PreBrief or DeBrief: The Art Story.

Then, someone said, “You’re abstract is wordy. Can you say it in 20 words or less?”

With a twitching smile, I said, “Sure.”

Nurse burnout is a problem. This A/R/Tographical study analyzes one nurse’s blog. The results are life changing.

With a smirk, I thought “Nailed it!”

Then, from the corner of the room, a hand raised. I knew who it was. It wasn’t a nurse, it was one of those marketing people. She said,

I don’t get it! Pick one or two images that appeal to your target audience and remove the rest.

I was deflated, but I could do it . . .

The whole room erupted. Everyone wanted to be in the story . . . Gina, Michele, Cheryl . . .

Then, David jumped up. He was still wearing the t-shirt he wore for his presentation as he shouted,

“You gotta work in my A/R/T piece!”

Me: [No response]

Tracy Hudson, what would we do without a forever friend who loves marketing?

David, thanks for your enthusiasm and t-shirt. I didn’t know the significance of that event until now.
